Sofia Leão discovers herself and the world with Mar, her debut album. At just 18 years old, Sofia Leão has known what it means to step on stage since childhood, thanks to her father, fellow musician Rodrigo Leão. Now she presents a collection of clear, simple melodies drawn on the piano, wrapped in strings or subtle electronic textures, and elevated by the vocal harmonies she creates herself.
If here we have the Farelo family, in Portugal there are the Leão family. Rodrigo, the father, was part of the group Madredeus, a reference in spreading Portuguese traditional music. His three children are all talented. The youngest, Sofia, released her first album at eighteen: if the father plays with the drive of a generation destined to reconquer the world, she sings with the calm and sensitivity of someone who only wants to wrap you up for a while; that often-mentioned idea of “atmospheric music.” A bit of Roserona, a bit of Marina Herlop, and a bit of Luísa Sobral, SOFIA LEÃO makes the music everyone wishes they could levitate to.
